News and Events – June 2020

We recently admitted our first married couple to the hospice.  John was 98 and was being cared for in Kingfisher ward at Andover War Memorial Hospital.  His wife, Eileen is 94 and had been admitted to Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital.  They both needed end of life care, but the family could not visit either of them because of very restricted visiting due to Covid-19.   We were able to transfer them both to CoBH.  They had been married for 75 years and were together again, sharing one of our large new bedrooms and their close family could spend time with them.  This is the difference our new hospice can make.

We are delighted that Staff Nurse Laura Patterson has completed here Venepuncture and Cannulation Competencies.  Congratulations Laura.

A massive thank you to everyone who took part in or supported the 2.6 Challenge for CoBH.  We have raised almost £8,000 in total.  Caroline Tomlinson raised a fantastic £2,704 jogging in memory of Ian.  Alan Twigg cycled 26 miles around Penton in honour of his wife, Sue.  John and Jenny Sutton, the organisers of Voices for Hospices Choir, cycled 52 miles on a static bike in their garden.  Helen Robinson and her dog Betty walked just over 28 miles.  Michele and Derek Gard, our Charitable Trust Director and her husband, walked a Marathon around their village over nine days.  Hospice staff, family and friends (both two and four-legged) walked and jogged 26 laps of the hospice and hospital grounds.  We also received £26 donations from many supporters.  Thank you so much.

Thank you so much to everyone who has supported us so generously during lockdown. As you know, all our planned events and fundraising to celebrate the new hospice and our 30th Anniversary year have been wiped out for the foreseeable future. This enormously effects our fundraising for the running costs of the new hospice and your help is very much appreciated. To donate you can go to our website www.cobh.org.uk  if you have any queries or information about donating or raising money for the hospice please call 01264 359789 or email: info@cobh.org.uk

Have your own personalised leaf on our Eternal Tree.  Our Eternal Tree is a beautiful, handcrafted copper wall sculpture set in the family area of the inpatient unit.  Engraved maple leaves can be added to the branches to create a stunning artwork and a lasting collection of memories and special messages.

Leaves can be dedicated in memory of a loved one, to express thanks, as a gift, to show support for the hospice or simply be engraved with your own name or personal message.  Download our leaflet for full details,

A BIG THANK YOU to The George and Dragon for a delicious curry, Premier Foods for their food donation and Tesco’s for their very kind delivery of night wear and underwear for our patients. Your support is very much appreciated.  Also to Hattie and friends and the 2nd Harestock Brownies and Rainbows for their lovely pictures.  They have been displayed around the hospice and are being enjoyed by the staff and patients, making everyone smile.

10@10 Late Night Walk 2020 will now be held on Saturday 19th September. Full details will be sent out in our July newsletter. This will be our 10th Late Night Walk at the start of the Hospice’s 30th Anniversary. Let’s make it the best ever!       Supported by Stitch-a-Logo and Harrow Way School.

The Hospice continues to operate 24/7 during the Covid-19 pandemic.  Day Care is suspended for the time being and our Community Team are supporting patients by telephone and video calls.  Visitor restrictions are in force and are limited to family members.  If you have any symptoms, please do not come to the hospice.

The Charity Office is open and staff have resumed their normal working hours within the hospice adhering to government advice and social distancing measures.  To protect our patients and clinical staff, we do not encourage you to come to the hospice.  Please support us by donating online via our website: www.cobh.org.uk or by using online platforms such as Facebook and JustGiving.  If you bring donations to the hospice, please put an envelope with your donation, contact details and relevant information in the red post box which is located in the front porch of the hospice.  It is emptied on a regular basis and providing information is given, an acknowledgement will be sent.  Please bear in mind that we would rather have donations in the form of a cheque rather than cash during this lockdown period.  Please call 01264 359789 or email: info@cobh.org.uk  if you have any queries or information about donating or raising money for the hospice.  We are looking to run virtual events to replace our cancelled or postponed events.

Could you make a donation, regular gift to CoBH or set up a Facebook Birthday page during the Covid-19 Lockdown?  We can’t fundraise at the moment but if you could give online for a special occasion or set-up a monthly standing order this would help us over this difficult period.  Thank you.

Amazon Smile is the same Amazon you know but donates 0.5% of the net purchase price (excluding VAT, returns and shipping fees) of eligible purchases to your chosen charity.  Support CoBH by starting your shopping at Amazon Smile.

A gift to CoBH in your will means care will be there for others when they need it most.  If you have made the incredible decision to leave a gift to CoBH in your will, or are considering doing so, we would love to hear from you. Contact Michele Gard on 01264 359789.
